Overview

If you want the TL;DR, just read this section.

The Nayba Collective is a theocratic confederation of cities, colonies, and nomadic groups within the northern portion of the central landmass of Eisen, an area which the Nayba refer to as "Siberia." While the government types and economies of member polities vary, all are loyal to the Church of the New Future, a Transhumanist cult.

It has a cold, unforgiving climate, mostly split between tundra in the north and and wooded taiga in the south. Animal and plant life is more common than expected due to a substantial number of geothermal vents. Local animals and plants are highly vicious and generally quite alien in appearance.

Nayba are technically a different, derivative species from humans, and over 95% have cybernetic augmentations. While this is held to be a holy gift, the Nayba religion also commands that they must retain certain human elements to their appearance, generally the face and upper body. Nayba biotechnology is highly advanced, and most Nayba bodies are a smoothly-blended mix of synthetic and organic components.

Aside from the North Sea, Nayba Collective is bordered entirely by Madlands, particularly Wunderland to the east, the Murdersaur Imperium to the south, and Pleasantsprings, Kansaw to the west.

Genetically engineered beetles are raised as a food crop, city services often resemble elaborate ecosystems, babies are exposed to numbers and characters via augmented reality interfaces, and leftover alien beasts are recycled into nutrient gel packs.

Fur is grown in large rolls for both rugs and clothing materials. Bullets aren't so much "manufactured" as "farmed." Capitalism and Socialism are just seen as "urban" and "rural," respectively. Augmented reality is used for most non-functional ornamentation on buildings. Nayba always know when they're dreaming, and when they're awake.

Glossary

Biomek - Biomechanical construct, generally capable of moving under its own power. Most mix cybernetic components with tissue that uses genes from aliens and animals, or aliens and humans.

Anthromek - Anthropomorphic biomek. Generally a body with strong human features permanently occupied by a human brain. (That is, it's a person's cyborg body.) This can range from something almost identical to human in appearance to something about as different as a centaur.

Zoomek - (Also sometimes written as Zuumek.) Zoological biomechanical construct. These mix machines, aliens, and animals, and are generally operated by sub-sapient AI.

Old World - The world prior to the Cataclysm.

The Cataclysm - According to the best historical estimates, Eisen was originally a much safer planet prior to the release of a number of insane - but not omnicidal - advanced artificial intelligences from what was, essentially, a floating asylum. They then spread across the surface of the planet and changed it according to their bizarre plans, prior to the transmission of an emergency shutdown code which destroyed most computer hardware on the planet.

Madland - Territory dominated by dangerous creatures or effects created by the now-defunct Cataclysm AIs. Entering without either being killed or captured and enslaved or altered generally requires armed force.

Geography & Environment

The environment of Nayba Siberia is split between subarctic tundra in the north and forested taiga in the south, each taking up about 50% of the available land. Geothermal vents are widespread, although the ground is relatively stable. This provides an energy source for flourishing plant and animal life, though little of it would be entirely recognizable to someone from Earth. Much of the animal life is quite violent, and appears to be leftover from some previous Madland or another. There are also plants which contain various kinds of anti-freeze and grow in areas that would normally be limited to permafrost.

Neighbors

Aside from the Arctic Sea to the north, Nayba Collective is surrounded on all sides by "Madlands" - leftover areas of dangerous creatures and phenomena created by the insane AIs responsible for the Cataclysm.

Wunderland - A robotic amusement park mixing elements of Alice in Wonderland with the Third Reich. Its blond, blue-eyed robotic Aryan minions are about half the height of a human.

Economy

The Nayba economy is based very heavily on biotechnology, as this isn't so much an industrial sector, but what the Nayba are. Bio-cybernetic constructs are used for most physical tasks, from construction to resource extraction (though Nayba also participate, especially on the frontiers). Buildings, bodies, and infrastructure involve a synthesis of biological and synthetic elements. Recycling of resources is very common.

Nayba Collective contains a mix of various economy types, varying by polity and generally based on population. Nayba differ mentally and socially from baseline humans, and have been known to run colonies of up to 25,000 as familial communes. Above 10,000, coordination and incentive issues start to interfere with operation of the colony, and there is generally a gradual shift towards more market-socialist and then market-based organizations. Metropolises of a million Nayba much more closely resemble market economies, including the presence of limited liability corporations.

The shared currency of the Nayba Collective is the Nayba Trade Unit (NTU). The value of 10,000 NTU is targeted at roughly the resource requirements to feed, house, and care for one human-type Nayba for one year, though in practical terms the value of the NTU varies by colony due to difficulties with physical transport of resources, which make trade in general a bit more difficult. Exchange rates with foreign currencies are unknown, due to relatively low or non-existent levels of trade with foreign regions.

The majority of the nation's average 122,000 NTU GDP / capita is driven by the great metropolises and their biotechnology design industries, which create the designs biofabricated elsewhere in Nayba Collective, including the semi-autonomous animal-like constructs responsible for mining.

Average Costs of Various Items in Nayba Collective

Item Cost Description
Annual Costs
Basic Human Lifestyle 10,000 NTU The various member polities of Nayba Collective have agreed to target the value of 10,000 NTU at around the basic human lifestyle for one year. There are some ultra-low-resource bodies that even less.
Medium Anthromek Lifestyle 12-20,000 NTU Nayba Collective produces a number of roughly human-sized anthromeks that are more complex and more capable than their human cousins, such as the Satyr and the Ant. This measure factors in the cost of eventual replacement.
Heavy Anthromek Lifestyle 35-60,000 NTU Some Nayba anthromeks are bigger than humans, but still smaller than (most) vehicles. This includes the lesser Arachne, Scorpions, Taurs, and similar anthromeks, which require more resources each year to fuel, maintain, and house.
Bodies & Anthromeks
Human 22,000 NTU Sometimes Nayba find it cheaper to grow a whole new human body and be transplanted into it than to repair an injured one.
Ant 42,000 NTU A lot of the cost for something like the Ant is simply opportunity cost for using the colony's biofabricator time.
Satyr 62,000 NTU Stronger, faster, more durable, and requiring more costly materials for its construction. Still mostly human-shaped.
Arachne (I) Anthromek 135,000 NTU The bulk of the expense of this body is in the intricacies of its onboard biofabricator. It's still small enough to go through normal doors without slowing down (much).
Arachne (IV) Anthromek 1,800,000 NTU This huge body is capable of constructing a colony by itself and contains a nuclear reactor and highly advanced biofabricator technology.

Government

The Nayba Collective

The Nayba Collective is a federation of city-states, colonies, and nomadic groups within what the Nayba call "Siberia." The confederal government, known as the Siberian Mutual Intercession, is composed of a nine-member executive council and a unicameral legislature. The government is considered theocratic, as all representatives must be members of the Church of the New Future, and there is very little separation between church and state.

Governments of member polities vary in political freedom and economy type. Some are direct democracies, while others are run by dictators, military committees, or senior families. Small colonies on the frontier generally have the least formalized governments. The most influential are typically the large metropolities, such as the Jokusai Metroplex Technate and the Konu Conglomerate Council.

The confederal government has four primary responsibilities:

There are also some regional governments, though these typically only have small numbers of personnel, and exist primarily to coordinate large infrastructure projects.

Notable Member Polities

Aside from some very bare bones rights of citizens, the member polities of the Collective have a wide degree of latitude for laws and organization. The taxes required for membership in the Collective are paid to the Collective by the member state rather than by individual citizens. This has resulted in a variety of economic systems and organizations.

History

Unknown The Catacylsm

The Cataclysm brings about the end of pre-existing civilization on Eisen, as thousands of 'digital spirits' are unleashed by a mortal fool. These malevolent spirits transform the world according to their twisted wishes, ravaging the poor fools with copies of distant and long-dead civilizations, whispering dreams made into realities, tortures, pleasures, and wars beyond mortal knowledge.

(The Posthuman civilization on Eisen collapses when a group of terrorists connect a vessel operating as an insane asylum for bizarre but not-actually-omnicidal AIs to the planetary computing grid. They do everything from trying to revive the Roman Empire, to attempting to convert the whole planet into one giant shopping mall.)

During this time, the area now called Siberia is occupied by the Zykal Badlands, filled with bizarre, dangerous, and alien ecology fed by the intense geothermal activity in the area. An insectoid hivemind species called the Zykal were gradually beating back increasingly-small pockets of human survivors.

-1 AC Heavenly Wave

The Great Mother of All Things speaks a divine word which purges the evil digital spirits from the world, though not their many children, which are allowed a chance at life.

(The shutdown of almost all computers on Eisen is triggered by a remote failsafe. The AIs themselves are purged from all network-connected systems - and nearly all systems are network-connected.)

0 AC Emergence

The Seer and the Nine Archons emerge near the village of Nayba. As the Archons are towering Posthuman creatures, they make short work of a Zykal invasion force, and manage to convert the desperate village both figuratively (to following the New Future) and physically (altering their genetics). The villagers become the first "Nayba."

0-20 The Seed

Taking advantage of the abilities of the Archons and plentiful biomass (partially due to location, and partially due to failed Zykal invasions), the village expands extremely rapidly. Population loss remains relatively high, as the village is in a constant state of war with the Zykal and local ecology.

Eventually, the Seer warns of a pending volcanic eruption, and the village of Nayba is abandoned.

20-40 The Gathering

A new town is founded at Jokusai, and swiftly begins to grow into a city. Nomads and armed units are sent out to convert remaining human survivors, and gather them together at the new city. Most convert in order to save themselves. Those that don't eventually end up getting overrun and destroyed by the Zykal. The population reaches 2.6 million.

40-60 The Roots

The major population hubs of Nayba Collective are founded through a series of well-armed groups spreading out from Jokusai at the direction of the Church. Over about 20 years, they begin to establish themselves. The population reaches 7.7 million.

60-80 The Vines

The hub colonies grow into cities, and further groups of Nayba spread out to settle in surrounding areas. Network access expansion follows, and low-bandwidth access stretches across the smoking tundra. The population reaches 18.8 million.

80-90 Holy War for Siberia

A holy war is ordered to exterminate the last of the Zykal from the territory. In the third month of the year 90, the final Zykal drone is fed to a biorecycler in a northern colony.

90+ The Flowering

With the Zykal destroyed, the Nayba focus on expansion again. Colonies at the edge of the Collective increasingly intrude into the neighboring madlands, claiming that the territory is part of Siberia and belongs to them by holy right. The rate of death has declined significantly within the core regions, but rural areas remain risky. Infrastructure development continues with the Trans-Siberian Rail Line, an underground rail tunnel which connects the six largest cities.

Culture

(Note: Despite the name, the Nayba Collective are not a hivemind.)

Overview

A great deal of the culture, both that of the native Sakha people, and the Russians living there, was destroyed by years of war and desperate survival against alien hordes. What there is of Old World Yakutia is a combination of the few books that survived the alien hordes, what was passed down through oral tradition, and, curiously, a few things that the Seer has revealed Sakha's past and "what Sakha could have become without Alien fangs" - though how he obtained this information is unknown. Russians were not that common in Yakutia and were more likely to live in the cities instead of as nomads, and took more of the alien attack.

Yakut (with a few Russian words thrown in for good measure) was the primary language, but the priestly caste speak almost exclusively in a language similar to Japanese that they refer to as "Ashkerron", with a smattering something that sounds like English. Most Nayba are learning this language, partially because the Church of the New Future has been releasing a steady stream of media using it, from which the Nayba have been picking up new cultural tropes. While at first much of it referred to what seemed like an alternate Earth, an increasingly-large portion of the media appears to refer to a completely different planet with its own history. This body of work includes not only video, but video games, music, static art, literature, and so on, which has allowed the Nayba Collective to have a staggering amount of cultural artifacts far beyond what its population could normally produce.

The use of virtual reality and augmented reality is ubiquitous, not only for coordination during hunting and other tasks, but also recreationally. Nayba buildings tend to be sparsely ornamented and rely on AR projections for visual richness. Citizens "dive" virtual worlds of all sorts for entertainment, to try out new bodies before switching to them, and to communicate with other Nayba throughout the Collective.

A variety of near-sapient AIs have become more common and easily transfer themselves around to various hardware on the Nayba network. They are typically represented by images of various spirits and serve the Collective and its citizens. They can also 'inhabit' certain hybrid constructs and merge and split for this purpose.

The Age of the Biomek Body

According to the most recent census, more than 99% of Nayba citizens are Sleights (either converted or natural-born), or have anthromek (human-like biomechanical construct) bodies. Very few natural humans remain, as the pressure to convert to something sturdier is immense in the dangerous frozen Siberian tundra. More than 85% of citizens are connected to the Collective's networks through cybernetic brain interfaces, and have ports for both digital interfaces and the unique Nayba Neural Interface.

While switching to a new body has become fairly commonplace during one's lifetime, the Nayba do not do so lightly. The brain transplant procedure requires induced neuroplasiticity - and it requires more of it the more radically different the body is. Larger, less human bodies make use of distributed "sub-brains" and cybernetic "virtual neurons" that have to be trained by the new user. Learning to control new muscles is not an easy task, and once someone is accustomed to them, it can result in feelings of vague discomfort or dysphoria to remove them.

Anthromek bodies designed for long-term occupation typically have genitalia to prevent dysphoria (one reason why Nayba wear clothes and nudity remains taboo), and many can even reproduce sexually, but the bulk of the region's explosive population growth over the last 30 years has been driven by incubator pods in the ant-nest-like underground cities. The children are brought up by adoptive family units whose role in their colonies is to raise children. Gender is seen as relatively less relevant now that changing entire bodies is practical - even if that change is expensive.

After neurological and psychological issues with the Spider biomek, Collective engineers moved on to their modern Anthromek design philosophy for all bodies expected to be directly inhabited by humans continuously for more than a month. That is, bodies for long-term use have significant human features, such as a human head, face, and torso.

Distribution of Bodies

See #Anthromeks below for specifics.
Population Body / Anthromek Description
80% Sleight The original Nayba upgrade. Sturdy, environment-resistant Yakut with golden irises.
11% Vision Red-skinned and devil-eyed, with furless tails for balance. Paramilitary cyborgs.
4% Taur Like a centaur, if the bottom half were an alien dog instead of a horse. Runs faster than a greyhound.
3% Ant An industrious body with reconfigurable pod mount, 2 arms, 2 legs, and 2 arm-leg-things.
0.5% Flourescence Four arms with long fingers, skinny, fast, and able to see UV and infrared.
1% Arachne Spider-taur. Comes in various sizes. The largest have an on-board fusion reactor, bio-reclamator, and biofabricator, making them very useful as support units.

Homo Sapiens Nayba

While the Seer seems to have understood the full implications of integrating alien genetic code into the population through the Sleight Serum, much of the rest of the people of Siberia weren't aware of its less obvious effects. The modified humans effectively became a new species, incapable of reproducing with non-Sleight humanity. However, some of the largest cultural impacts are from the serum's psychological effects.

One key advantage has been enhancements in overall neuroplasticity, which helps adaptating to the various exotic anthromeks now popular in the Collective. For baseline humans, the introduction of something like an additional pair of arms might cause issues not only with readjusting the brain to use them, but also in a lingering feeling that the extra arms "don't belong." For the Nayba, however, new limbs feel unusual only for a few weeks to a few months, and generally feel entirely natural after six months to a year. Various bodily dysphorias are also rare, especially for those born as Sleights rather than converted.

While the amount of Hybrid and Extractor genetics influencing the brain isn't nearly as great as the amount influencing cold-resistance, some of the collectivist influence has rubbed off on the Nayba. The Nayba aren't anywhere close to being a hive-minded species, or even quite like ants, but they find themselves less averse to work, and are able to maintain commune-like economic setups with populations of 2,000 or even up to 4-5,000 individuals. (Above this, more capitalist systems become dominant, although the Nayba don't consider the two systems to be fundamentally at odds.)

Gender has become less relevant, and bi- or pan-sexuality has become more common, but is still in the minority. (Ironically, gender is now being loosely associated with some of the anthromeks - male for Taurs, female for Arachne, and either for Ants.) On the one hand, this has reduced a historic source of friction among humans. On the other hand, however, the relationship landscape has become chaotic and has yet to reach a new equilibrium point. Alterations to patterns of attraction, polyamory vs. monogamy, have resulted in a wider and more unpredictable space of relationship structures becoming viable.

Technology

Nayba Networks and Software

The Nayba have their own network called the Weave, which is highly resilient and has multiple redundant modes of transmission. It is easily capable of operating as a mesh network when no backbone infrastructure is available. The Weave is similar to the internet, although it was created with augmented reality and virtual reality built-in when it was first designed. The system was introduced to accompany the implanted cybernetic interfaces of 2025. Small nodes are situated throughout much of Siberia, allowing for some geographically-localized storage even in remote areas.

While the Weave isn't capable of downloading information directly into users' memory, Nayba with cybernetic implants are capable of controlling the software using their thoughts, similar to how one would control muscles, after a period of training. Many don't know how to write complex ideograms manually, as they can easily form the required letters in their head using their cybernetic implants, then transmit it as a text message without ever writing it down.

Software is ubiquitous and highly integrated into Nayba life, so to help prevent people from getting "lost", the sensation or feeling of augmented reality and virtual reality is distinct from reality itself. (Many describe it as "dream-like".) Most software is offered for free by the state, as part of the Nayba's technological research. This includes software for augmented reality "reskinning" of one's environment; tactical coordination software to auto-tag friendly and enemy troops and show locations, instructions, and estimated enemy locations based on triangulated weapons fire; software for automatically creating 3D models of areas based on video and photographs; virtual reality "lobbies" one can chat in; telepresence message services; "tagging" shared virtual spaces with artwork; and so on.

The security of the software is generally pretty high thanks to clear security models enforced at the hardware level.

Biomeks

Biomeks are biomechnical constructs - a mixture of living tissue and cybernetic components. To the Nayba, "biomek" as a noun refers to the "mobile" biomeks, some of which are controlled and occupied by humans, and some of which are controlled by a mixture of AI and organic brain tissue sort-of-kind-of like an animal.

Anthromeks

Anthromeks mix organic tissue with human and alien DNA with synthetic components and are typically "occupied" by human brains - that is, the body is created, and then the subject's brain is transplanted inside of it. (Before use, a low-class AI "drone" brain can also be used as a placeholder to maintain basic bodily functions.)

Anthromeks were originally developed after pilots who were continuously operating early versions of the Spider automek for months on end for caravan and hunting duty, using the Nayba Neural Interface, began to experience psychological problems as their brains attempted to remap themselves for control of the vehicle. Many had issues readjusting to life on two legs, and some had permanent changes to their sense of identity. After this problem began to crop up, it was decided that all biomeks designed for long-term direct human piloting would have key human features, such as the face, head, torso, and so on.

An Ant anthromek, with reinforced spine and mounts, and typical detachable pod.

Year Anthromek Description
2020 Sleight

While not technically necessarily a biomek, the typical Sleight has been implanted with some important cybernetics and is a step above "baseline" humans in a number of ways. The Sleight has slightly different organ configuration and a couple of new organs, is moderately stronger and faster, has mild regenerative abilities, and confers its user with limited low-light vision. It is also resistant to cold, toxins, diseases, and radiation, though not immune to any of those things. It has a thin temperature-insulating layer under the skin.

The Sleight is not fully compatible with humans, and is technically a different species, even though it looks similar on the surface - the only noticeable differences on the outside are the golden irises and purple blood. A human-Sleight pairing would not produce a child, and a Sleight organ transplant would be mildly toxic to humans.

Unlike every other body on this table, it is possible to become a Sleight without a brain transplant by using the Sleight Serum.

2030 Vision

The Vision has red or dark-grey skin (although this is customizable to a degree), a furless tail for balance which is about half as strong as an arm, and eyes with golden irises, black sclera, and slitted, cat-like pupils. It was originally created as a body for hunters and warriors, and thus has extensive internal cybernetics and more significantly-boosted strength and endurance, including a backup blood pump. It also has enhanced low-light vision and a limited ability to see infrared.

2033 Fluorescence

A highly-dexterous body with advanced computer control, offering extremely fine motor-control. It has long fingers, and its chassis is modified to support the simultaneous operation of four arms. Tends to be a bit thin and wiry in the limbs. With similar visual capabilities vision includes vision spectrum, infrared, and UV, requiring prolonged adaptation period. Popular with mechanics, scavengers, and doctors.

2038 Taur

Resembles a centaur, if it were based off an alien greyhound or cheetah instead of a horse. This body can reach speeds of up to 120km/h, and is very popular with hunters. It's lighter than it looks.

2040 Arachne (100 series)

The Arachne anthromeks are actually a series of anthromeks developed by the Arachne Project as intended replacements for the Spider automek. The 100 series were the first Arachne anthromeks to be developed, and use a limb configuration similar to the Ant anthromek in some ways. It is, in many ways, the predecessor to the more general-purpose Ant.

The Arachne 100 has four legs for walking, four arms for carrying and manipulation, and a large non-removable pod on the back. Designed as a field support unit, it contains a large battery, a compact bio-reclamator, and a small-scale bio-fabber. It can also extrude a strong "webbing" useful for rappelling, and can carry large loads over great distances.

The 100 is the only series that can fit inside the same spaces as humans. It has, oddly enough, found some niche use in nurseries.

2044 Arachne (200 series)

The 200 is about the size of a tachikoma or a large pickup truck. Like the 100, it contains an on-board bio-reclamator and bio-fabber, but it also contains a more conventional fabricator and a fusion reactor. It is able to carry very large loads, has some small wheels for faster movement within a base, and can be used as a platform for heavy weapons.

Bodies of this kind are fairly niche and continuing development is mostly "funded" by enthusiasts. Its humanoid section is detachable into a separate human-like body, but most long-term 200 users report this as feeling "like walking around as just my head."

2045 Ant

Originally intended primarily for industrial workers, the six-limbed Ant anthromek has exploded in popularity. It has a heavily-reinforced spine, two arms, two heavy-duty legs, and a pair of middle appendages that can function as either arms or legs. It is capable of lifting heavy loads, and has a series of mounting points on the lower back that can connect a variety of configurable pods - as well as hook into its life support systems.

Soldiers like it because it is capable of carrying - and powering - a variety of heavy weapons through all sorts of terrain. Industrial workers like it because it makes it easier to hold onto objects while working and climb on all sorts of structures. Hunters like it because the pods allow for extended missions, and the carrying capacity makes it easier to haul back captured game.

2046 Arachne (300 series)

A handful of these "colony-constructor" bodies which are larger than a typical main battle tank have been produced, stretching the line between "body" and "vehicle." The user's brain is actually stored deep under layers of armor, and the detachable, 2.5m-tall humanoid "terminal body" is operated remotely when disconnected, except as an emergency measure.

Users of this body are generally considered eccentric even by other Nayba.

International Relations

Nation / Group Relationship Description
Hybrids (Aliens) Hostile The Hybrids want to convert humanity and take over Earth. The Nayba want to control Siberia, which is part of Earth. Hybrids are killed as part of hunting and their bodies are fed to bio-recyclers.
Extractors (Aliens) Hostile Intending to mine Earth and apparently the rest of the Solar System, the bodies of the Extractors are often rich in minerals and nutrients. Also they are enemies of humanity. Combining the two, the Nayba "harvest" their periodic onslaughts.
Union (Aliens) Hostile Also intended to conquer Earth, but have been put into a sort of holding pattern that has seen few clashes with the Nayba. The Nayba hope they'll leave, surrending their lands.
Illuminati-controlled Kamchatka Tense The Illuminati have long-term plans to conquer the Earth. The Nayba would like to keep Siberia, which is part of the Earth. Naturally, this creates issues for international relations and tourism.
Socialist Technate of China Warm There is some cross-border trade between these two nations. As China is mostly just trying to survive the current geopolitical situation and not take over the world, some Nayba caravans trek through the denser Chimera zones to trade. Limited information about these groups of "Siberian cyborgs" (in Mandarin Chinese) has gotten onto the internet from these contacts, though almost nothing about their higher-tier bodies.
United Reich No Contact Nayba Collective is on the other side of not only alien-infested Siberia, but also a Universal Union zone and Mechanocratic Russia. As such, the United Reich is largely unaware of its existence.
S. Industries No Contact
Mechanocratic Russia Unknown MechaRussian scouting forces have recently encountered organized Nayba forces operating in Siberia, an area they presumably would like for themselves.
The Synkom Avoiding The Church of the New Future has warned about interactions with this faction.
